Our History

The Livonia Kennel Club was founded March 30, 1955 in Livonia, Michigan. The Club was incorporated under the laws of the State of Michigan, April 28, 1955 and its original Constitution and By Laws adopted October 19, 1966.

The Detroit Race Course in Livonia was the site of LKC's first eight all breed AKC sanctioned shows, which began in 1956. Lester Gardner was Show Chair for the initial event that September 16. The Judging Panel for the 711 dog total entry show was comprised of E. Pickhardt (BIS),
W. Reeves, C. Krebs, F. Grant, F. Booth, B. Hoffman, J. Faigel - for Conformation, and F. Snyder, J. Collins, R. Noltie for Obedience.

Over the years many venues, including the original racecourse, hosted the Club's show. Some places that current exhibitors may recall are the Allen Park Civic Center, University of Michigan - Dearborn Campus, and Livonia's Schoolcraft College. In the earliest days of the club's existence only one show was held each year, but this changed in 1961. Thereafter, there were two, usually one in the spring and one in the fall, and usually on a weekend shared with another all-breed club.

In 1997, Livonia moved both shows to the same fall weekend each year, and the following year moved them to Labor Day weekend. It was for the 2001 shows (Saturday & Sunday) we assumed our present show site at Wayne County Fairgrounds in Belleville, Michigan.

There are many additional features are now available to our Livonia Kennel Club exhibitors such as full hook-up RV camping and the tremendous convenience of plentiful nearby restaurants and shopping. At this spacious indoor/outdoor location we are also able to offer indoor obedience and, in addition to our well-attended Puppy Match, several new events such as a Canine Good Citizen test, a Heart/Eye/ID Health Clinic, and in 2002, an Agility Fun Match.
